By Sherri Smeraglia
At Smeraglia, we believe that matching the right puppy to the right family is an art—and a little bit of science, too! Our temperament tests play a huge role in finding that perfect match. One part of the test we always get asked about is the energy level evaluation. But while energy levels are important, there’s so much more to our testing than just that.
When matching puppies to families, we look closely at both the puppy’s energy levels and the energy levels of the family. This ensures that the dog’s needs and the human’s lifestyle are compatible. A family with high energy may need a more active puppy, while a low-energy family may prefer a companion dog that enjoys relaxation. Finding that balance helps create a happier home for both the puppy and the family.
Let’s Talk Energy Levels!
Our energy level scale ranges from 1 to 10. Why such a big range? It helps us fine-tune our matches so that every family finds the best companion, whether they want a snuggly couch potato or a playful adventure buddy. Matching the energy levels of people and dogs is essential to meet both their needs. Here’s how it works:
Puppy Energy Level Scale (1-10)
1. Level 1: Extremely Low Energy
• Best suited for: Companion dog
• Ideal for: Individuals or families with a calm, quiet lifestyle, such as elderly individuals or those needing a relaxed, low-maintenance companion.
• Not ideal for: Busy or active households.
2. Level 2: Very Low Energy
• Best suited for: Companion dog
• Ideal for: Families or individuals preferring a peaceful, low-key companion.
• Not ideal for: Active or highly dynamic homes.
3. Level 3: Low Energy

• Not ideal for: Very active families or individuals.
4. Level 4: Below Average Energy

7. Level 7: Active

Matching Your Energy Level With Your Dog’s
It’s not just about what the dog needs—it’s about what you need too! We know that everyone has different energy levels, and so do our puppies. Whether you’re looking for a snuggly companion or an active service dog, we’ve got you covered. Our temperament tests help us identify the perfect match between your energy level and your dog’s.
Remember, the temperament test is just a snapshot of your puppy’s energy level at a particular moment in their early life. As they grow, you may notice changes in their energy, confidence, and behavior, but we ensure you have the best match for the long term.
