We all know the phrase “Hump Day” usually refers to Wednesday.
Well—this wasn’t Wednesday.
But over at Natalie and Sam’s brand-new dream home, it was most definitely Hump Day.
I’m Sherri, founder of Smeraglia Kennels and TeddyBearGoldendoodles.com, and this is one of those stories that proves no matter how perfect your doodles may seem… you never know what they’re up to when you’re not around.
Meet the Dream Team
Natalie and Sam recently moved into their beautiful new home. Everything was clean, organized, and finally flea-free (yep, we blogged about that last week). And along with them came their blended family of four beloved doodles:
• Moo – a black-and-white Parti Teddy Bear Twoodle, Natalie’s “first child,” raised from just under 6 weeks old. Preppy, polite, and 100% rule-follower. In his eyes, Natalie is his mother.
• Lemon – an apricot-and-white Parti Goldendoodle, Natalie’s second doodle. She’s soft, gentle, and as sweet as her name. She’s also spayed.
• Bear (Byer Bear) – a gorgeous Merle Teddy Bear Twoodle, adopted as a return. He’s got the most beautiful coat of all, plus a touch of anxiety and a flair for drama.
• Snoop – Sam’s big, blocky, goofy F1 English Teddy Bear Goldendoodle. He’s happy-go-lucky, totally aloof, and everything goes right over his head.
The Scene: New Home. Fresh Start. Chaos Pending.
It was about a week after move-in. Natalie and Sam decided to run out to grab dinner and a few things from Home Depot. The doods were all secured in the living room behind baby gates.
As they pulled out of the driveway, Natalie and Sam exchanged that proud, adulting look—
“We’re doing it! We’re grown. We’re thriving. We’ve got this.”
Then they checked the nanny cam.
Bear. Was. Humping.
To their horror and confusion, they saw Bear—who, again, has never acted this way—humping Lemon like he was auditioning for The Bachelor: Canine Edition.
Lemon looked stunned.
Moo looked horrified.
Snoop was probably wondering when snacks were being served.
Natalie and Sam froze in the car.
The fajitas? Forgotten.
The paint swatches? Useless.
Their jaws hit the floor as they stared at the screen in shock like,
“Is this… happening?”
“Is Bear… THE PROBLEM?”
Natalie’s voice boomed through the camera speaker:
“BEAR! STOP THAT!!”
The Doodles React
• Bear froze mid-thrust like he just got caught sneaking out of class.
• Lemon blinked twice like she was definitely planning to join a support group for “doodles who’ve seen too much.”
• Moo looked like his whole world had shattered. He could not believe his eyes watching his siblings behave like that.
• Snoop? The lovable golden meatball? Clueless. He just wagged his tail like, “Anyone else hear the fridge open?”
So… Why Do Dogs Hump?
Let’s be clear:
Everyone is fixed.
The boys are neutered. Lemon is spayed.
This isn’t about hormones or reproduction.
Here’s the truth: Humping is actually super common—and not always what you think.
It can be caused by:
• Play behavior
• Excitement or overstimulation
• Stress or anxiety (especially for dogs like Bear who’ve been returned or had a rough start)
• Dominance or social dynamics
• Habit—especially if it started young
And yes—females do it too. It’s not just a boy thing.
Trained… But Still Doodles
All of these doods have been to Doodle Prep School. They know better. They usually act right.
But just like human kids—when the teacher leaves the room, chaos finds a way.
What Can You Do About It?
If your doodle suddenly goes full WWE when you’re not home, try this:
• Use the “Leave it!” command (yes, even through your nanny cam speaker—it works!)
• Redirect the behavior
• Stay calm and don’t panic
• Reach out to us—we’re here to help!
At Smeraglia’s Doodle Prep School, we offer customized virtual dog training and behavior support for real-life doodle issues—including the awkward ones.
Final Thoughts from the Doodle Mama
